BART has approved nearly $12 million in upgrades to its San Mateo County stations as part of the transit agency’s effort to modernize facilities, improve safety and refresh its rail system’s appearance, BART officials said.

The investment is tied to BART’s Station Glow-Up Strategy, a program aimed at improving station ambience and keeping infrastructure in good repair. The work will include new LED lighting, roof and gutter replacements, deep cleaning to remove bird droppings, landscaping, and the removal of vandalism-prone bus shelters, BART officials said in a statement Thursday.

BART said it has already increased cleaning and maintenance in their stations in San Mateo County over the past year, including repairing floors and benches, applying fresh paint, and removing outdated equipment such as old phone booths and deteriorated artwork at the Colma station.

The Millbrae station is receiving new LED lighting that is scheduled for completion this month.

In September, BART finished installing new fare gates at all six San Mateo County stations.

BART said construction will begin in early 2026 and finish by the end of the year.
