Former Mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, announced Wednesday that she will not be running for Congress to replace House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco.
“After thoughtful consideration, I have decided not to pursue a run for Congress,” Breed said in a statement.
Breed, who served as San Francisco’s mayor from 2018 to 2025, stepped away from government in January this year after losing re-election to Daniel Lurie.
But when Pelosi announced earlier this month that she would not be seeking re-election for California’s 11th Congressional District, it opened up an opportunity for other candidates to throw their hats in the ring.
In her statement, Breed did not elaborate on the reasons for her decision. Nevertheless, Breed said she remains committed to advocating for Democratic values and the people of San Francisco.
“I will continue fighting for the people of San Francisco and for the values that define us as Democrats: fairness, dignity, and a future where every community can thrive,” she said. “That work has always been bigger than any one campaign or any one office, and I remain fully committed to it.”
So far, there are two contenders in the race for Pelosi’s seat — State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and former political staffer Saikat Chakrabarti. Chakrabarti served as chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, after she won election in 2018.
