Hello, and welcome to Bay City News for Monday, Sept. 15, 2025. Here is a look at some of the top stories from across the region.

Our partners at EdSource report that California lawmakers have passed several significant education bills, now awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature. Among them is Assembly Bill 715, which creates a statewide Office of Civil Rights with an Antisemitism Prevention Coordinator to track and address antisemitism in schools. Another landmark bill, Assembly Bill 1264, establishes the nation’s first ban on ultra-processed food in school meals, phasing out harmful foods by Jan. 1, 2028. Additionally, Senate Bill 414 aims to increase oversight of charter schools, and Assembly Bill 1454 provides teachers with evidence-based literacy training, including phonics, to improve reading proficiency among students.

Shifting our focus to business news, our partners at San Jose Spotlight report that Spirit Airlines will cease all service to and from San Jose Mineta International Airport after Oct. 5. The airline, known for its low fares, filed for bankruptcy for the second time in a year, leading to the cancellation of its last remaining route, nonstop flights to Las Vegas. This cut is part of a broader downsizing for Spirit, which will also stop service at other California airports including Oakland-San Francisco Bay, Sacramento, and San Diego. Airport officials do not anticipate a significant decline in passenger volumes at San Jose, noting that Spirit’s reductions were introduced gradually, allowing travelers and the airport to adjust.

Meanwhile, a major shift in weather patterns is expected across the Bay Area this week. The National Weather Service announced Monday that warmer-than-normal temperatures will hit the region early this week, rising 5 to 15 degrees above average through Wednesday. Interior areas like Livermore, Concord, and San Jose could see temperatures in the low to upper 90s by Tuesday. However, these conditions are expected to give way to the potential for monsoonal thunderstorms and lightning strikes by Friday, as remnants of Tropical Storm Mario move up from Southern California. The combination of low humidity and potential dry lightning raises the threat of wildfires, particularly in mountain ranges like the Mayacamas, Santa Cruz, and Diablo.

In tragic local news, a 16-year-old boy from Southern California has been identified as the spectator who died after falling from a freeway on-ramp during a sideshow in Crockett. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office identified him as Jose Cuevas, of Harbor City. He fell approximately 75 feet from an Interstate Highway 80 ramp near the Carquinez Bridge early Saturday morning. California Highway Patrol officers responded to the sideshow, involving over 100 vehicles, shortly before receiving reports of Cuevas’s fall. Authorities believe the death was accidental, and the incident remains under investigation.

Turning to crime, a suspect fleeing police in Fairfield over the weekend allegedly tried to hide his gun by placing it on top of a baby in a carriage. Officers were called Saturday morning to an apartment complex on East Tabor Avenue where a man had reportedly brandished a gun. As police arrived, 28-year-old Cristian Rodriguez ran into a stairwell and then stood in front of a woman pushing a baby carriage. After he was detained, an unloaded gun was found on the baby, while a loaded magazine was discovered in Rodriguez’s pocket. Thankfully, the woman and baby were not injured. Rodriguez was booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of criminal threats, carrying a concealed weapon, and child endangerment.

Finally, in Oakland, police are investigating a robbery that occurred Sunday morning at a Montclair jewelry store. According to authorities, multiple suspects armed with hammers broke display cases and took jewelry from a shop on the 2000 block of Mountain Boulevard. Employees were allegedly pepper-sprayed during the incident. Aster Jewelers, the affected store, posted on social media that while they were shaken and suffered burning eyes from the pepper spray, no one was seriously hurt, and no customer repairs or personal jewelry was stolen. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle.
