The next time you are driving through downtown Hayward, your ride might be just a bit safer thanks to the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to take impaired and unlicensed drivers off the streets.

Hayward Police said a DUI checkpoint held at the end of March at one notorious intersection with a history of traffic violations led to four arrests.

Two people were caught allegedly driving under the influence and two more were nabbed for reportedly driving with a license that had been suspended due to a DUI, police said.

A total of 677 drivers were contacted on March 28 at Foothill Boulevard and City Center Drive.

Thirty-six people were cited for driving without a license or with one that had been suspended or revoked, and seven vehicles were towed.

Hayward Police said they hold DUI checkpoints at intersections that have a history of crashes and DUI arrests to promote safety and deter drunk driving.
