Former Mayor Teresa Gerringer announced that she will resign from her position on the Lafayette City Council effective next month.
Gerringer revealed her decision this past Friday, four days after the council selected Councilmember Gina Dawson to be mayor and Councilmember Wei-Tai Kwok to serve as vice mayor during the Dec. 11 meeting.

Gerringer is in her second term on the Lafayette council, having served as mayor in 2022, according to a biography on the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors’ website. Gerringer is chief of staff for District 3 Supervisor Diane Burgis.
Gerringer’s resignation, which she said was for family reasons, will take effect Jan. 23, 2024.
“It has been my honor to serve the residents of Lafayette for almost 23 years, first as an elected member of the Lafayette School District Governing Board and for the last five years as an elected member of the Lafayette City Council,” Gerringer said in her letter of resignation.
The council will discuss next steps to fill the seat at its regular meeting in January.
The mayor of Lafayette, a one-year term, is decided by a vote of the City Council during the first regular meeting in December from among the current council members.
