The city of Pacifica announced the closure of the Pacifica Municipal Pier on Thursday due to displacement and damage to the concrete walkway.
In a press release, the city said the observed cracking and separation near the pier abutment will require an assessment from the city’s structural engineer. The pier, located at 2100 Beach Blvd., will remain closed until it is approved for public use.
According to Pacifica’s public works site, the pier has been closed for repair and reopened several times throughout the last decade.
On Dec. 28, 2023, the ocean’s high tides and large waves significantly damaged the Pacifica Municipal Pier, leading the city to declare the pier unsafe. It closed for a structural assessment and repair in January and February 2024, according to city press releases. The December event indefinitely left the pier only partially open due to sustained damage, which was announced in June 2024.
Thursday’s announcement is the first in nearly two years, although it is currently unclear what caused the damage this time.
Besides these closures, the pier has also undergone annual condition assessments, with the 2023 report noting an estimated $19 million for structural repairs and construction management.
Built in 1973, the 1,140-foot-long “L” shape pier has been a known fishing pier facing Sharp Park Beach in the Bay Area. The city public works site describes the pier as “currently considered in good shape, though it shows the result of its age and the heavy use it receives.”
