San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa has taken an early lead in the race for the county’s chief elections officer and assessor-county clerk-recorder after the first round of results were released shortly after polls closed Tuesday night.
As of 8:10 p.m., Canepa had 54% of the vote. Jim Irizarry, the current assistant chief elections officer and assessor-county clerk-recorder, received 46%, according to unofficial results.
Canepa and Irizarry are facing off after the current officeholder, Mark Church, decided to not seek reelection this year.
The first round of results includes ballots that were received in the mail, at voting centers, and in ballot drop boxes on or before Friday. Early results amounted to 56,837 ballots counted so far for this race, accounting for about 13% of registered San Mateo County voters.
The next round of results will be released at 9 p.m.
