Supervisor Alan Wong has introduced a legislation that would strengthen enforcement against the illegal discharge of fireworks in San Francisco.

The legislation would increase local penalties and give law enforcement officers the authority to issue citations, authorities said.

Under the legislation, a first offense would be treated as an infraction carrying a fine of $125 to $250, a press release issued Friday noted.

Meanwhile, a second or subsequent offense within five years would be punishable as a misdemeanor.

The proposal also follows recommendations from a 2023-24 Civil Grand Jury report that called for stronger enforcement tools to address illegal fireworks, which authorities described as a year-round public safety concern.

“As we approach the Fourth of July, this legislation takes a practical and balanced approach to improving public safety, supporting our first responders, and protecting the quality of life our residents deserve,” Supervisor Wong said.
