Caltrans will begin overnight lane closures next week on U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco as crews continue rehabilitation work, transportation officials said.

From next Tuesday through May 15, crews will remove sections of the Highway 101 median barrier between Bacon and Cesar Chavez streets during overnight work scheduled from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., Caltrans said in a statement.

The far-left lanes in both northbound and southbound directions of Highway 101 will be closed during the operation, which requires cutting and replacing existing concrete barriers.

“Residents and motorists, particularly those near the Cesar Chavez exit at the U.S. 101/I-280 split, should expect significant noise during the barrier-cutting operations,” Caltrans officials said.

The broader project stretches from the Candlestick Point State Recreation Area to 16th Street and is intended to preserve the freeway corridor, improve ride quality and enhance safety for drivers.

Known as a diverging diamond interchange, or DDI, it is the first of its kind in the Bay Area. Caltrans says it will cut wait times by up to 94% during the busiest commute times. Also, transportation officials announced that in Vallejo, a new interchange at state Highway 37 and Fairgrounds Drive is expected to open to traffic on May 16, weather permitting.

The project features what Caltrans officials described as the Bay Area’s first diverging diamond interchange and only the second built on a major highway in California.

Transportation officials say the redesigned interchange is intended to improve traffic flow, motorist safety and bicycle and pedestrian access in the area.

Overnight closures are planned from 9 p.m. May 15 until 9 a.m. May 16, including ramp closures at Highway 37 and Fairgrounds Drive and a temporary closure of Fairgrounds Drive between Sage Street and Gateway Drive.
