Deputies are investigating a series of copper wire thefts from telecommunications lines across parts of west Sonoma County that have disrupted phone and internet service for residents.
In a statement Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office said deputies working in multiple areas, including Petaluma, Windsor, Sebastopol, Graton, Forestville and Freestone, have received multiple reports of copper wiring being stolen from utility poles owned by AT&T since February.
Investigators said unknown suspects have cut down the lines, stripped away protective coating and removed the copper wiring, often leaving the outer casing behind. The thefts have interrupted service for customers until repairs can be completed.
Detectives have been investigating these cases since the first reports and are continuing to follow leads. The Sheriff’s Office said the thefts are believed to be happening overnight in remote areas across the county.
Residents are urged to remain alert during late-night and early-morning hours and to report unfamiliar or suspicious vehicles parked along roadways or in residential driveways to dispatch at (707) 565-2121.
Anyone with information about the thefts can also submit an anonymous tip through the Sheriff’s Office Silent Witness webpage.
