A new countywide study is seeking input from young people to better understand their experiences and needs related to substance use, county officials announced.
The 2026 Santa Cruz County Youth Substance Use Spotlight study is inviting residents ages 13 to 20 to complete a brief, confidential survey, county officials said.
The survey, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete, asks participants about their perceptions of substance use, where they seek information and support, barriers to accessing services, and what prevention efforts are working or need improvement.
“There’s no better way to help achieve their goals than by asking for their help and guidance. Young people know what is happening and what it will take to provide the support that they deserve,” said Susan Brutschy, President of Applied Survey Research.
Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and respondents will receive a $20 gift card, according to county officials.
The study has been reviewed and approved by an institutional review board, and parental consent is not required.
The survey will remain open through May 1. Findings will be used to guide local strategies aimed at improving youth health and well-being, with a focus on equity and access.
