Reported serious crime in Oakland fell nearly 30% in the first three months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, said police, who noted declines across cases of homicide and robbery.
In a statement Wednesday, the Oakland Police Department said crimes such as homicide, aggravated assault, rape, robbery and burglary dropped 29% from Jan. 1 through March 31 compared with the same period in 2025.
Police reported homicides fell 39%, from 23 to 14 cases, while robberies were down 30% from 537 to 374. Aggravated assaults went down 13% from 678 to 588, and cases of rape fell 50% from 46 to 23.
Burglaries also dropped 54%, from 2,424 to 1,124 reports, police said.
The department also said officers conducted 66 human trafficking investigations, resulting in 81 arrests, and recovered more than 310 firearms so far this year.
Meanwhile, the department said they are continuing to monitor slight increases in residential robberies and cases involving weapons other than firearms or knives.
“We recognize these statistics may not reflect the experiences of those impacted by crime,” Police Chief James Beere said in a statement.
In a statement released by the department, Mayor Barbara Lee said the downward trend reflects coordination between violence prevention programs, crisis response teams and law enforcement, but cautioned that more work remains.
Police plan to focus on operations addressing illegal dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles, illegal sideshows, and increased patrols focused on robberies and shootings, while working with federal partners.
