Staffers with the office of San Francisco District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder are asking for privacy and patience as she navigates a “mental health condition” that has led her to announce a leave of absence.
Fielder, who has represented the city’s Mission District since January 2025, is suffering from an “acute personal health crisis,” an aide said Friday after the supervisor hadn’t been at City Hall for about two weeks.
On Sunday, her office said she needs space to recover before she can make any major decisions, seemingly in response to questions about whether she will resign.
“She wants to regain stable health so she can thoughtfully and responsibly consider her options,” Fielder’s office said.
Her staff also asked that the press not report on “unsubstantiated rumors” and asked that people understand that mental health conditions affect one in five people and should garner the same respect and sensitivity as any other medical condition.
“Fielder will be taking a medical leave of absence, during which time the District 9 office will remain dedicated to meeting the needs of our constituents, neighbors, and community members,” her office said.
Colleagues offer support
Multiple colleagues on the Board of Supervisors released messages of support for Fielder.
“As colleagues, we stand fully behind Supervisor Fielder as she takes the time she needs to focus on her health and recovery,” said Supervisor Shamann Walton. “Our office is committed to stepping in and supporting her team in any way necessary to ensure continuity of service for District 9 residents. This is a moment for care, coordination, and community — and we are here to do our part.”
Supervisor Myrna Melgar expressed optimism that the board and Fielder’s staff will be able to handle her absence.

“This is not the first time a member of the Board of Supervisors has been incapacitated for a long period of time,” said Melgar. “Michela Alioto-Pier was out for 3 months and we were able to facilitate the representation of that district while she was out and her staff kept working. I have full confidence that the District 9 staff can and will do that as well.”
Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisors Chyanne Chen, Connie Chan, and Bilal Mahmood also sent her well wishes and praised her service.
“I sincerely hope she is able to continue serving with us, but most of all I want to support her and respect her privacy as she makes whatever decision is best for her,” said Mahmood. “Whatever path she chooses, I know she will remain a fierce advocate for our communities.”
On Friday, Supervisor Matt Dorsey wrote, “What matters to me above all else is the wellbeing of a colleague, who happens also to be a good person and dedicated public servant.”
