The Berkeley City Council has adopted “The Berkeley Rule,” a new policy framework for the ethical use of artificial intelligence in city government, city officials announced Thursday.
Approved on Tuesday last week, the policy sets 10 principles for how AI can be used in go operations, with an emphasis on transparency, accountability, and human oversight.
City officials said the framework is designed as a practical guide for governments and signals the technology sector to innovate for the public.
The policy also includes safeguards for high-impact AI systems used in areas such as housing, hiring and public safety, requiring public accountability and human review, city officials said.
Councilmember Ben Bartlett authored the measure, which was co-authored by Councilmember Igor Tregub.
