Police arrested a driver after a bicyclist died in a hit-and-run collision over the weekend in San Jose, police said.
The crash happened about 2:30 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Coleman Avenue and Hedding Street.
A 2023 blue Tesla sedan headed north on Coleman at a high rate of speed allegedly hit the bicyclist as he was crossing the road outside of any marked crosswalk, police said.
The man riding the bicycle died at the scene. His name was not released.
The driver of the Tesla drove away before police arrived. Police used license plate reader cameras to track down the car, which was located nearby. The driver wasn’t in the car when officers found it.
Police said the driver later returned to the scene of the collision and allegedly showed signs of being under the influence.
He was taken into custody and later booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of hit and run, driving under the influence, and vehicular manslaughter.
The crash is the city’s 5th fatal collision this year.
