After nearly one year of looking for applicants for a vacant Ukiah Unified School District Board of Trustees seat, and a failed attempt at a special election last fall, the Mendocino County superintendent of schools has ordered yet another election to fill the Trustee Area 6 seat on the board.
UUSD announced that Mendocino County Superintendent of Schools Nicole Glentzer ordered the special election.
The election will be held to fill the Area 6 seat, which has been vacant since spring 2025, when former board member Rebeca Orozco resigned.
Last summer, the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors approved a request by the Board of Trustees to hold a special election in November to choose Orozco’s replacement.
However, no applications for the seat were deemed to be qualified, so the seat has remained vacant.
Special election scheduled for August
According to the Ukiah Unified School District, the special election will be held Aug. 25. Applications can be filed starting at 8 a.m. May 4, and the deadline to submit them is 5 p.m. May 29.
To qualify for the position, applicants must reside in Trustee Area 6. Applicants are encouraged to confirm their eligibility by reviewing the trustee area map.
Trustee Area 6 includes parts of south and southeast Ukiah, from East Gobbi Street to South Dora Street and South State Street, extending past Beacon Lane to Robinson Creek and the Russian River. The vacant seat’s term will last until Dec. 11.
According to the school district, the candidate receiving the highest number of votes will serve the remainder of the current term through December and can file to run in the November election to serve a full term in office.
Applications will be available starting May 4 at the Mendocino County Registrar of Voters office, 501 Low Gap Road, Ukiah.
