San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said more police foot patrols will be committed to BART plazas in the city’s Mission District.
“We’re adding officers walking between the 16th and 24th Street plazas and deploying a sergeant to manage the plazas and surrounding corridors,” Lurie said Saturday on social media.
The BART Mission stations are notorious for violent crime, sales of stolen goods and open-air drug markets.
In January, two people suffered life-threatening stab wounds about a half-block from the 16th Street BART station. In December, an 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a fatal stabbing just south of the station, at Mission and Sycamore streets.
In November, a man who appeared to be lying in the street was run down at 16th Street and Rondel Place, just west of the 16th Street BART station.
“We’re also changing the street cleaning schedule and expanding our community ambassador presence to keep this corridor welcoming and well cared for,” the mayor said.
“The Mission deserves public spaces that reflect the pride of the people who live here — and we’re committed to making that the standard every single day,” Lurie said.
