The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the death of a sergeant who suffered a medical emergency while on duty Tuesday.
Sgt. Jason Whelen died despite “extensive life-saving efforts by fellow deputies and medical personnel,” the Sheriff’s Office said on social media Wednesday.
Whelen began his career with the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office in 2007 and was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2013, and was a husband and father of four, sheriff’s officials said.
“He was known within the Sheriff’s Office for his kindness, steady leadership, love of Jesus Christ, and infectious smile. He brought positivity to those around him and was someone who could always be counted on,” the office’s social media post said. “Our thoughts are with Sergeant Whelen’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. The Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of a respected leader, a valued partner, and a cherished member of our law enforcement family.”
