Officials in Stockton have appointed Christine Tien as its deputy city manager, bringing back a veteran public servant with more than two decades of leadership experience in the city’s local government.

In a statement, City Manager Johnny Ford said Tien’s experience and leadership will help advance the city’s priorities and improve quality of life for residents.

She joins the city from The California Endowment, where she served as a senior program manager overseeing work in health equity, housing stability, environmental sustainability and economic opportunity.

The appointment marks a return to Stockton for Tien. She previously served as deputy city manager and community relations officer from 2001 to 2009, overseeing multiple departments and leading citywide efforts focused on sustainability, neighborhood revitalization, workforce development and public safety. During that time, she also served as interim community development director, budget officer, and parks and recreation director.

“I am honored to return to the city of Stockton and to serve the community once again,” Tien said in a statement. Tien holds a law degree from the University of Arizona, a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard Kennedy School, and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
