The Ukiah Unified School District is again seeking applicants for a seat on its Board of Trustees that has been vacant for several months.

The Area 6 seat has been vacant since last spring when board member Rebeca Orozco resigned. In the summer, the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors approved a request by the Board of Trustees to hold a special election in November to choose a replacement.

However, no qualified applications were submitted in time for the November election, so the seat remains vacant.

“We are trying again to fill the seat by publicizing the vacancy now,” Ukiah Unified spokesperson Dan Dougherty said in a statement.

Area 6 includes parts of south and southeast Ukiah, from East Gobbi Street to South Dora Street and South State Street, extending past Beacon Lane to Robinson Creek and the Russian River. The vacant seat’s term will last until Dec. 11.

Residents of Area 6 are invited to apply for the open position on the board. Applicants must be registered voters who live within the Area 6 region. Applications are available at uusd.net or can be picked up in person at district offices at 511 S. Orchard Ave. in Ukiah, as well as at Grace Hudson, Nokomis and Yokayo elementary schools.

Interested residents must submit their applications by 5 p.m. on Jan. 29.

The Board of Trustees will conduct interviews with qualified applicants during a scheduled meeting on Feb. 5. The chosen applicant will be announced at that meeting.

For more information or to request an application, contact Debbie Ornelas, executive assistant to the superintendent and the Board of Trustees, at (707) 472-5002.
