The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District has named a longtime member of its ranks as its next fire chief, according to fire officials.
The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District board of directors approved Deputy Chief Jonas Aguiar’s appointment. He brings 20 years of experience with the district, having joined in 2005 and steadily risen through the ranks.
Most recently, Aguiar served as deputy fire chief, where he oversaw emergency medical services, training and communications. He also managed a $65 million operating budget and led more than 160 employees.
“I am deeply honored to be chosen as the next fire chief,” Aguiar said in a statement released by the fire district on Monday, noting that he grew up in the area and has spent his career serving the community.
Board President Matthew Stamey said the board is confident Aguiar’s experience and leadership will guide the district forward.
The fire district said Aguiar started his tenure as the new chief on Thursday. He succeeds Paige Meyer, who served as fire chief of the district for 13 years.
