The city of San Rafael will host a community engagement meeting Wednesday to discuss an interim shelter project that will open late spring.
The interim housing project planned for 350 Merrydale Road will provide up to 65 private cabins for an unhoused community living in a secured encampment along the Mahon Creek Path downtown. The program will provide shelter, security and social services and is scheduled to conclude and close by June 30, 2029.

The meeting will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Venetia Valley School multipurpose room at 177 N. San Pedro Road, and will include interpreters and printed materials. City staff will present updates on the project, summarize community input received to date, explain changes to the site design and program policies, and outline next steps. Key topics include safety and security, site layout, traffic and parking, daily operations, good neighbor policy and code of conduct.
The meeting follows a Marin County Superior Court ruling that denied a request from nearby residents to halt the city’s purchase of the Merrydale property, allowing the deal to move forward.
More information on the Merrydale Road interim housing site can be found on San Rafael’s city website.
