The city of Napa has ways to help residents recycle not only their Christmas trees, but the lights that adorned them.
Scouting America’s annual Christmas tree recycling event takes place on Saturday in Napa. Local Scouts will pick up trees curbside and then the conifers will be processed into mulch and compost, the city said.
To have a tree picked up, set it out curbside by 9 a.m. Saturday and not before. Make sure all decorations such as ornaments, tinsel, stringed popcorn, nails or tree bases are removed.
The service is free, but residents are encouraged to make a donation to Scouting America by leaving a check between $15 and $25 at the resident’s door made out to the group. The Scouts will come to the door and collect it.
For those unable to meet the Saturday deadline, trees can go out on regular collection days starting on Monday, Jan. 12. Trees taller than 8 feet should be cut in half, the city said. Trees that are flocked should just go in the regular trash bin and wreaths can go into the yard waste bin.
The city of Napa asks that no one put Christmas lights in the recycling bin because they get tangled up with other items and in the sorting machines and cause problems. Instead, lights can be dropped off year-round at the Napa Recycling and Composting Facility at 820 Levitin Way in Napa, or at the Devlin Road Reuse and Recycle Center at 889 Devlin Road in American Canyon.
