A road near Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara is closing starting Monday as part of safety and security measures associated with Super Bowl LX taking place there next month.
Stars and Stripes Drive, which connects to the Great America train station at Tasman Drive and Lafayette Street, will be closed from Monday until Feb. 22 because of the Super Bowl, the city announced recently.
The closure includes the ramp from Tasman Drive and the bike path. Parking, shuttle, and ride-hailing services for the Great America station, which serves Amtrak and Altamont Corridor Express trains, are being relocated to 2111 W. Tasman Drive.
The Super Bowl, scheduled for Feb. 8 to decide the National Football League champion, will prompt other road closures as gameday approaches and will impact access to the Youth Soccer Park and other city facilities.
From Jan. 28 to Feb. 10, Tasman Drive will close to through traffic between Great America Parkway and Calle Del Sol, and the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail will also be closed during those dates. On the date of the Super Bowl, Great America Parkway will also close between Bunker Hill Lane and Patrick Henry Drive, among other nearby closures, according to the city.
When the city of Santa Clara announced the planned road closures on Facebook last month, many people questioned the extended period of the closures.
“Closing roads the day of or a couple days ahead of time is one thing. Closing for weeks though is ridiculous. There is no need to mess with it for that long before or after the event,” one user wrote.
Detour routes and traffic advisory message boards will be advising people of the closures. The city said any questions from residents or commuters about the closures can be sent to the Bay Area Host Committee, the nonprofit entity organizing events like the Super Bowl and upcoming games of the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament at Levi’s Stadium.
