Families can start the new year with a free trip to the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens, which is offering free admission for children ages 11 and under throughout the month of January.
The promotion runs through Jan. 31. Up to five children may enter free with each paying adult, zoo officials said.
“This is a great opportunity to enjoy the Zoo, be outdoors and see amazing animals if you haven’t visited in a while,” Cassandra Costello, the zoo’s interim co-CEO, said in a statement on Tuesday. Each visit can be different, from watching giraffes eat breakfast to seeing wolverines play in the snow, according to Costello.
The zoo also announced that beginning on Monday, discounted admission will again be available through EBT/SNAP and the Museums for All program. Named cardholders with a matching photo ID can buy up to four tickets for $5 each at the on-site ticket windows.
In addition, the zoo partners with the Discover & Go program, which allows visitors with library cards from the San Francisco Public Library and other local libraries to receive free passes. Passes can be printed or downloaded by logging in to the Discover & Go website with library card information.
Winter hours at the zoo are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Founded in 1929, San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is home to about 1,500 animals representing nearly 200 species, along with seven gardens featuring native plants. The zoo is located near the Pacific Ocean at the corner of the Great Highway and Sloat Boulevard.
