The San Francisco Police Department received hundreds of firearms during a weekend gun buyback event hosted in partnership with violence prevention organization United Playaz.

More than 200 guns, including 13 assault weapons, were handed in, SFPD Southern Station said in a social media post.

The Saturday event aimed to get more firearms off the streets through an exchange where people handing in guns could remain anonymous and receive cash. Each handgun was exchanged for $100, and assault weapons were bought for $200 each.

“You bring us your guns, we will give you cash,” said SFPD Southern Station Capt. Amy Hurwitz in a video posted to social media. “No questions asked.”

The guns collected will be destroyed.

Saturday marked the 14th annual gun buyback event that SFPD has hosted with United Playaz, a local nonprofit that provides a range of services for youth who are vulnerable to entering the criminal justice system.

“This is such a critical measure in making sure that we continue to reduce gun violence in our city,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins in a briefing to promote the event.
