Santa Rosa police say they are increasing downtown foot patrols by officers and civilian volunteers in high-traffic areas this holiday season.

The police presence will be stepped up on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in areas such as Railroad Square, Old Courthouse Square and Santa Rosa Plaza.

The officers and Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) Downtown Ambassadors are being dispatched in anticipation of large crowds and retail activity, police said.

The Downtown Ambassadors are intended to assist the public and enhance safety and customer service through Dec. 24, police said.

Patrol officers will also be on foot in busy shopping areas such as Montgomery Village, Coddingtown and Roseland Business District, police said.

Police will supplement security at the Santa Rosa Plaza Mall. Officers will patrol the interior, perimeter and parking garages.
