The Point Arena City Council has appointed a new mayor, Barbara Burkey, to lead the city’s government in the upcoming year.
At the beginning of the Nov. 18 City Council meeting, Councilmember Jeff Hansen nominated Burkey to become the next mayor to serve through December 2026. All of the council members agreed unanimously, and Burkey was appointed mayor.
In an interview, former mayor Anna Dobbins, who resigned as mayor in September for health reasons but is continuing to serve on the council, said Burkey would be the best fit as the new mayor of Point Arena.
“She’s very active, thorough, and well-liked in the community,” Dobbins said. “She has Point Arena’s well-being in her heart.”
According to the city of Point Arena’s website, the mayor generally guides the meetings and has ceremonial duties alongside council member tasks.
Dobbins said Burkey has officially started as mayor, but a public meeting will be held in January where it will be officially announced to the public.
In the resignation letter submitted by Dobbins on Sept. 10, Dobbins wrote, “I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the City Council, city staff, and most importantly, the residents of Point Arena for your trust and support during my time in office.”
