Stockton city officials are inviting residents to help name a new park, opening a nomination process that runs through January.

The 4.96-acre Cannery Park, located at 3993 Stapleton Drive at the corner of PFC Jesse Mizener Street and the state Highway 99 frontage road, is seeking a permanent name, city officials said Tuesday. Residents may submit naming suggestions online or by using a printable form available on the city’s website. The deadline is 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 20.

“Names may be recommended that honor outstanding individuals who are recognized or remembered for their service to the community of Stockton for over 25 years, or can reflect something about the geographic, topographic, or historical significance of the area,” community services director Kris Farro said in a statement. “We will review and consider all applications submitted for each of these naming opportunities.”

Submissions will be reviewed by the city’s Naming Committee, made up of representatives from the Stockton Arts Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, Planning Commission, Cultural Heritage Board, Public Works Department, and Community Services Department. The committee will forward its recommendations to the City Council.

Applications not chosen for this park will be kept on file for three years for possible use in naming other city parks, facilities, or properties. The new park is funded through the Stockton Consolidated Landscape Maintenance Assessment District, which supports park maintenance.
