A week after she was sworn in as San Francisco’s District 4 supervisor, Beya Alcaraz will be stepping down, Mayor Daniel Lurie said Thursday night.
In a brief statement, the mayor said he spoke to Alcaraz and they agreed that issues surrounding her small business would be a “distraction.”
“She and I agreed, as we always have, that the Sunset deserves a supervisor who is fully focused on serving the community. We also agreed that the new information about her conduct while running her small business, which I learned today, would be a significant distraction from that work,” the mayor said.
“In our conversation, she told me she intends to resign as supervisor.”
Alcaraz was sworn into office by Lurie on Nov. 6, to represent District 4 after former supervisor Joel Engardio was recalled by voters in a decisive election in September.
Lurie first met Alcaraz at a night market in the Sunset after Engardio was recalled. She introduced herself and pitched to him why she would make a good choice for supervisor.
Alcaraz, 29, was born and raised in the Sunset neighborhood, which is in District 4. For six years, beginning at age 22, she owned and operated The Animal Connection pet store, according to information on her supervisor website page.
Lurie said Thursday that he would start work on finding another candidate to represent the district, which has been divided over the Great Highway’s transformation into Sunset Dunes, a park that thousands of pedestrians, runners and bicyclists use every day.
“I’ve heard again and again about the fraught politics that have divided District 4, and I believe the residents of this community deserve better,” Lurie said. “They should have a supervisor who can be fully dedicated to representing them, advocating for their families, and bringing people together. My team and I will get back to work finding that person right away.”
