Laney College Athletic Director John Beam, a beloved coach and mentor in the Oakland community, was listed in critical condition Thursday evening following a shooting earlier in the day at the college campus, authorities said.
Just before noon, Oakland police officers were sent to the East Oakland campus at 900 Fallon St., in response to reports of a shooting at the Laney College Fieldhouse.
Beam was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland following the shooting, said Peralta Community College District spokesperson Mark Johnson.
“The Peralta community is devastated by his shooting and deeply concerned for his well-being,” Johnson said in an update on Beam’s conditions Thursday night. “We are stunned and heartbroken that such violence has touched our campus and one of the most respected and beloved members of our Laney, Peralta, and Oakland community.”
No arrest has been announced in connection with the shooting.

Beam has been director of athletics at Laney College since July 2006 and was profiled in the “Last Chance U” documentary series on Netflix.
Classes were canceled after the shooting, but will resume on Friday, Johnson said.
Mental health and counseling services will be available to all athletes, students, and employees at the college.
“John Beam is a renowned coach, teacher, mentor, and leader whose impact extends far beyond athletics. Our thoughts are with him and his family,” Johnson said.
