Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Moore has been appointed as the next chief of the Monterey Fire Department, the city announced this week.
His appointment takes effect Jan. 1, 2026.
Moore succeeds Fire Chief Andrew Miller, who will retire after a long career serving the Monterey community, city officials said.
A 27-year veteran of the department, Moore began his career in 1997 as a part-time fire inspector before rising through the ranks as firefighter, engineer, captain, division chief, and assistant chief. He became assistant fire chief in 2024.
Moore will be the first Monterey fire chief since 1980 to have started his career within the department, according to a press release issued by the city Wednesday.
City Manager Hans Uslar praised the appointment, calling Moore a trusted and proven leader.
Miller also voiced confidence in his successor, saying Moore’s leadership and dedication “make him the perfect choice to guide the department into its next chapter.”
