A Meals on Wheels program that’s delivered “Breakfast Bags” to more than 500 vulnerable seniors a week in Contra Costa County is running out of money.
The program was launched in 2020 to add support for the isolated during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said Saturday in a press release. It was financed by county funding and temporary pandemic relief.
“However, as the costs for groceries, fuel, and other necessities have risen, the demand for Breakfast Bags has also outpaced the funding available to sustain it,” Meals on Wheels said in a statement.
The philanthropy said it will end the Breakfast Bag program Oct. 2.
Meals on Wheels said its flagship home-delivered meal program will continue serving more than 1,900 local seniors every week.
The Walnut Creek-based charity said it is pursuing new funding in hopes of bringing breakfasts back “in a more sustainable way.”
