Speed limits will soon be lowered on parts of 20 streets in Concord following a recent vote by the City Council.

City engineers conducted a survey of speed and collision data and roadway conditions ahead of the council’s Aug. 27 decision, which affects parts of main thoroughfares in the city like Clayton Road, Concord Avenue, Kirker Pass Road and Port Chicago Highway.

Under state law, cities can adjust speed limits if it is supported by a traffic study. The Concord ordinance will have to be approved a second time for final adoption, and the new speed limits would take effect once new signs are installed at least 30 days afterward, city officials said.

“Speed limits must be both safe and enforceable,” Mayor Carlyn Obringer said in a statement. “This update ensures that our posted limits reflect real-world conditions while prioritizing the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.”

Alberta Way between Clayton and Ygnacio Valley roads will have its speed limit reduced from 35 to 25 mph, Ayers Road between Clayton and Ygnacio Valley roads will go from 35 to 30 mph, Babel Lane between Clayton and Cowell roads will go from 35 to 30 mph, and Burnett Avenue from the northbound Interstate 680 ramps to John Glenn Drive will go from 35 to 30 mph.
