The SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Center is urging motorists to slow down and stay alert for fledgling gulls as the young birds begin leaving their nests in early August.
This seasonal warning comes as many of the young gulls, though adult-sized, are not yet able to fly.
“This is a natural part of the fledging process,” Beth Brookhouser, spokesperson for SPCA Monterey County, said in a statement. “They are supposed to be out of the nest, on the ground, while their parents still tend to them while they learn to fly. Unfortunately, there’s nothing natural about where they’re landing, and every year hundreds are hit and killed by cars.”
The SPCA Wildlife Center says they are currently caring for 46 young gulls, including several that survived being struck by vehicles. They are also rescuing nestling gulls, which are covered in white and gray downy feathers with black spots.
“Sadly, people are driving way too fast,” Brookhouser said. “Drivers expect these large birds, who they don’t realize are babies, to fly away and they simply can’t. We are issuing this alert asking people to slow down and give time for the gull babies to walk out of the way.”

The most dangerous areas for fledgling gulls reportedly include Cannery Row, the area near CVS on Lighthouse Avenue in Pacific Grove; and the Edgewood Shopping Center in Sand City, particularly in front of and behind Target, PetSmart, and Lucky’s.
“We strongly recommend slowing down and being compassionate for these birds,” Brookhouser said. “The fledgling season is brief, we can all slow down for a few weeks.”
If an injured gull or other wild animal is spotted, the public is encouraged to call the SPCA Wildlife Center at (831) 264-5427 or report it online. Donations to support the SPCA Wildlife Center also can be made.
