The Campbell Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers who spoof the department’s official phone number while posing as officers.
In a public advisory, police said they have received multiple reports from residents who were contacted by scammers pretending to be from the department. The callers allegedly try to get personal information or payments under false pretenses.
“Campbell PD will NEVER call to ask for payment or personal information such as your Social Security number,” the department said in a statement posted on social media.
The scam calls often claim that the person needs to pay bail, remove a warrant, pay a fine, or avoid deportation or arrest, according to police.
Residents are urged to hang up immediately if a call seems suspicious and to verify any claims by calling the police at (408) 866-2101.
Police did not say whether any arrests have been made or how many people may have fallen victim to the scam.
