Police in Sausalito are urging residents and visitors to remain alert after a recent surge in auto burglaries in the city, with more than 10 cases reported in the past week alone.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Sausalito Police Department said the burglaries have been occurring across both commercial and residential areas, with hot spots including the Bridgeway corridor and municipal parking lots.

Police said the thefts, described as “crimes of opportunity”, tend to spike during the warmer spring and summer months. Sausalito, a popular waterfront city, draws thousands of tourists each year, making it a frequent target for such crimes.

The latest spike in thefts in the city follows broader concerns in the Bay Area over organized vehicle burglaries.

The Sausalito Police Department, noting that officers are operating amid a staffing shortage, advised residents and tourists alike to remove valuables from their vehicles, or at least keep them out of sight, and to report any dubious activity immediately.

“If you see something suspicious, say something. Don’t assume someone else will call. Your vigilance can help prevent crimes and protect our community,” police said.
