Lafayette City Councilmember Gina Dawson has resigned from the council, she announced Tuesday.
Dawson, who served as mayor in 2024 and won re-election to a new four-year term in November, announced her decision at the City Council meeting. It becomes effective June 1.
“This decision was at once an easy one to make, because family will always come first for me, but also a hard decision, as it has been a great privilege and experience to have served the residents of Lafayette since first elected in 2020,” Dawson said in a statement released Wednesday by the city.
“I am very grateful, and honored, to have worked with this council, our dedicated city staff, the many passionate and considerate volunteers for the City, our wonderful business and school communities, and other organizations and individuals who work to make, and continually improve upon, the quality of life and community that Lafayette enjoys.”
Dawson was less than six months into a term that was not due to end until 2028.
The council will discuss how to fill Dawson’s seat at its next meeting on June 9.
