Brentwood Police Chief Tim Herbert has announced his retirement.

Herbert, who served as chief for the past three years, spent more than three decades in police service — including the past 23 years in Brentwood.

“It has been an absolute honor and privilege to serve the dedicated members of the Brentwood Police Department, city staff, and the citizens of Brentwood,” Herbert said in a statement. “I am truly grateful to the Brentwood community for your trust, encouragement, and partnership. To the men and women of the Brentwood Police Department — thank you for your professionalism, your resilience, and your dedication to this community. It has been my greatest honor to serve alongside you.”

Herbert’s retirement goes into effect Sept. 5.

Herbert began his law enforcement career in 1990 as a reserve officer with Brentwood police. He was hired the next year as a full-time officer with Hercules police, where he served for more than a decade.

Herbert returned in 2002 to Brentwood, where he steadily rose through the ranks and was appointed chief in 2022.

The city in a statement announced plans to appoint an interim chief. A formal recruitment process for a new chief will begin in the coming months after the City Council appoints a permanent city manager.

“Chief Herbert’s leadership has made a lasting impact on the Brentwood community,” said Interim City Manager Darin Gale. “His dedication to public safety, integrity, and community engagement has strengthened our police department and set a high standard for those who follow.”
