Monterey County’s famed Rocky Creek Bridge on state Highway 1 has fully reopened to traffic again after being closed for more than a year because of a slipout on the coastal side of the highway.

The southbound lane reopened in March after the viaduct structure was completed in the southbound direction. Travel was opened in both directions Saturday after crews installed six pre-cast concrete girders that will help finalize repairs to the northbound viaduct and cleared two heavy cranes from the highway.

Emergency repairs are continuing as traffic is again flowing in both directions.

Traffic lanes are open in both directions for the first time in more than a year on Rocky Creek Bridge in Monterey County on May 17, 2025. The southbound lane was damaged on March 30, 2024, after a slipout of the land west of the highway gave way. Nobody was injured. Emergency repairs caused intermittent closures and one-way traffic controls.

The project on the scenic coastal highway north of Big Sur is expected to be fully completed this summer, according to Caltrans.
