Oakland Airport has introduced five electric buses to its parking shuttle fleet, serving passenger and employee lots.

“We look forward to continuing our path towards an all-electric bus fleet,” Port of Oakland Director of Aviation Craig Simon said Saturday in a news release.

The battery-electric buses will help position the airport to meet state electrification regulations. Its existing shuttle buses are powered by natural gas. It will take about a decade to reach a 100% zero-emission shuttle bus fleet, according to the airport.

The airport is wrapping up construction on a bus charging depot.

OAK is operated by the Port of Oakland, which also oversees the Oakland seaport and 20 miles of East Bay waterfront. Together with its business partners, the Port supports more than 98,000 jobs in the region with more than a $174 billion economic impact.
