Hello, and welcome to Bay City News for Friday, May 16, 2025. Here is a look at some of the top stories from across the region.
First, in Concord, police announced on Thursday, May 15th, that two brothers from Fairfield were arrested in connection with a double stabbing that occurred earlier in the month. Twenty-five-year-old Cristian Cobos and twenty-two-year-old Ramon Cobos were taken into custody on Tuesday, May 13th. Investigators believe the stabbings, which happened around 3 p.m. on May 6th on Willow Pass Road near Market Street, stemmed from a dispute over graffiti tagging between rival gang members. Both victims were transported to hospitals and are recovering from their injuries. The Cobos brothers were booked into jail on suspicion of attempted murder. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Detective Raul Alvarado at (925) 603-5820 or the Concord Police Department tip line.
From that news, we turn to a statewide alert. The California Highway Patrol has issued a Feather Alert for a Mendocino County woman who has been missing since December of last year. Thirty-two-year-old Sarah Brandal was last seen around noon on December 25th, 2024, near Stanfield and Rainer roads in Woodburn, Oregon. On Thursday, May 15th, 2025, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office requested the CHP to activate the alert. The Feather Alert system is utilized to help locate missing Indigenous women and Indigenous persons when it is believed they are in danger. Authorities urge anyone with information on Sarah Brandal’s whereabouts to contact their local law enforcement agency or call 911.
Meanwhile, in San Francisco, police on Thursday, May 15th, identified a suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred a day earlier near Fisherman’s Wharf. Forty-four-year-old Abraham Torres is accused of the shooting, which was reported at 1:11 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14th. Officers initially responded to Columbus Avenue and North Point Street where a male suspect in one vehicle allegedly shot at a person in another vehicle before fleeing. A vehicle was later found near Leavenworth and Beach streets with an unresponsive male victim in the driver’s seat suffering from gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police stated that Torres later went to the SFPD Central Station and turned himself in. He was booked on suspicion of murder.
Shifting our focus to San Jose, an arrest has been made in connection with a man who was deliberately run over and killed, police announced on Thursday, May 15th. Officers were called to a parking lot in the 1700 block of Southwest Expressway just after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14th, where they found an unresponsive man who was declared dead at the scene. The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner determined the victim suffered trauma consistent with being hit by a vehicle. Detectives gathered evidence suggesting the act was intentional and, using automated license plate reader data, identified a suspect vehicle and a person of interest, Jaime Cruz Castanon. Castanon was located and arrested later that evening in San Jose and booked into jail on suspicion of murder. The motive and circumstances surrounding the case are still under investigation.
In other developments, a new Nintendo store officially opened its doors in San Francisco’s Union Square on Thursday, May 15th. The opening is being seen as a positive development for the city’s downtown retail sector. This is Nintendo’s second store in the United States and the first new one to open in two decades. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie were present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the store, located at the corner of Geary Boulevard and Powell Street. The store, which sells Nintendo-themed apparel, home goods, plushies, video games, and consoles, is initially operating on a reservation system for the first weekend and Memorial Day weekend due to anticipated high demand.
Finally, some news on an arson case. An arrest was made this week in connection with a fire that caused an estimated seven hundred thousand dollars in damage to a home in Rio Vista, Cal Fire announced on Thursday, May 15th. Security camera footage from March 21st captured a man using a hammer to break into a home on Sherman Island East Levee Road. Once inside, he reportedly ignited road flares and used them to light fires in three separate areas of the residence. Kenneth Allen Hubbs was identified as the suspect, and a no-bail arrest warrant was issued for him on May 5th. On Wednesday, May 14th, Hubbs was picked up in San Joaquin County by deputies after his license plate showed up on an automated license plate reader.
