THE SAN JOSE POLICE DEPARTMENT announced its plans for the upcoming Cinco de Mayo celebrations to ensure public safety for attendees while minimizing disruptions for residents.
The department said Thursday that it will enforce road closures, deploy additional personnel and implement strategies to deter and respond to illegal activities.
On May 3, a Cinco de Mayo car show will require the closure of Barack Obama Boulevard between W. Santa Clara Street and W. St. John Street and W. Santa Clara Street from Stockton Avenue to state Highway 87. These closures will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
On May 4, a parade will prompt the closure of S. King Road from McKee Road to Story Road, as well as the I-680 on and off ramps at S. King Road from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Additional closures are also being evaluated in Downtown and East San Jose. The affected roadways will be based on historical data and may be adjusted depending on real-time traffic conditions on the day of the events.
Officers will coordinate with affected residents to ensure continued access to their homes.
The police are also using road closures as a proactive strategy to prevent unsanctioned gatherings, particularly those involving individuals from other cities.
Visitors and residents are advised to follow the police department on its social media accounts to keep updated with road closures.
The police added that they are deploying additional resources to respond to illegal sideshows. Spectators could face fines of up to $1,000 or arrest, while participants risk fines ranging from $3,000 to $4,000 and a 30-day vehicle impound.
