A Ukiah area middle school teacher has received statewide recognition for demonstrating educational excellence.

Kristen Tangren was named State Educator of the Year by the California League of Middle Schools earlier this month, the Ukiah Unified School District said in a news release.

Tangren, a math teacher at Eagle Peak Middle School in Redwood Valley, was awarded the title at a state conference in early March.

The California League of Middle Schools is a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the school experience for middle schoolers across the state.

Every year, teachers, administrators, counselors and certified school personnel are nominated by their peers for the title of State Educator of the Year, which is awarded by CLMS. Up to 10 finalists are chosen from throughout the state and one winner is chosen who “exemplifies educational excellence.”

At the CLMS annual conference in Monterey, Tangren, a finalist, gave a speech about self-care for educators and the importance of structured learning environments, the school district said. Impressed with her speech, CLMS judges named her State Educator of the Year.

She was nominated by Dan Stearns, principal of Eagle Peak Middle School. “She is an exceptional teacher who cares deeply for her students,” he said. “It’s an honor to see our school recognized at the state level.”

Tangren will be honored at a school assembly Thursday at Eagle Peak.

“When we work together as a team, we achieve great results,” she said. “This award is for all teachers and staff at Eagle Peak.”
