Early unofficial results from Tuesday’s election show Chris Rogers with a double-digit lead over challenger Michael Greer to claim state Assemblymember Jim Wood’s seat in January.
Rogers, a Democrat, declared victory early Wednesday morning with 66.1% of the vote districtwide. He currently serves as a Santa Rosa city councilmember and in 2020 served a two-year term as the youngest mayor in the city’s history.
His challenger Greer, a Republican, sits at 33.9% of the vote. Greer lives in Del Norte County where he served as trustee of the Del Norte Unified School District.
District 2, which includes Del Norte, Trinity, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties, plus northern and western Sonoma County, is vast in size.
Wood announced in November 2023 that he would not seek reelection after six terms in the Assembly.
Rogers called the win bittersweet due to the outcome of the presidential election that elected Donald Trump president.
“I will work every day to address the North Coast’s most pressing issues — climate change, access to health care, and the high cost of living, to name a few,” he said. “But now California must also be the tip of the spear — pushing back against Donald Trump’s dangerous vision for our country’s future.
“It is time, once again, for California to lead,” he said.
