East Palo Alto Councilmember Lisa Gauthier has taken an initial lead in the race for San Mateo County District 4 supervisor as the results in the first round of ballot counts were released on Tuesday, according to the county Registration and Elections Division.
The county released preliminary results of the count at 9 p.m., which included all mail-in ballots received on or before Friday, all ballots returned to drop boxes or vote centers on or before that day, and a portion of vote center ballots.
Of these ballots, Gauthier has garnered 61% and East Palo Alto Mayor Antonio Lopez has taken 39% in District 4.
District 4 encompasses East Palo Alto, Redwood City, the unincorporated community of North Fair Oaks and portions of Menlo Park. Only voters in District 4 can have a say in this race between Gauthier and Lopez.

As of September, there were about 76,400 registered voters in District 4. The ballots in these preliminary results accounts for about 23,400 voters, or 31% of the district’s total registered voters, according to voter registration statistics from the county.
With high voter turnout expected as the race coincides with the U.S. presidential election, the numbers will likely shift as ballots received either in the mail, drop boxes or voting centers after Friday continue to be added to the overall count.
