Photographs of loved ones flanked by glowing candles and marigolds will adorn a community altar during Novato’s free Dia de los Muertos celebration on Saturday.

The city is inviting people to bring photographs of loved ones who have passed away to place on the altar at the event, which will take place on the Novato Civic Green at 901 Sherman Ave. from 4 to 6 p.m.

Dia de los Muertos, also referred to as Day of the Dead, originated in Mexico. It’s a lively celebration held in honor of loved ones who have passed away, and cities all over the Bay Area, including Oakland, Antioch, Napa and Salinas, are holding events this weekend.

At the Novato celebration, the city will provide electronic candles, silk marigolds, and cups of water for the community altar, organizers said.

Activities also include live music, photo frame decorating, and magnet making. More information is available on the city website.
