A $2.4 million sales tax increase proposed for Lafayette on the November ballot will be monitored by a five-member Citizens Oversight Committee, the city said.
The Lafayette City Council is asking voters to boost the sales tax by a half-cent on every dollar spent. That would bringing the total sales tax rate of 8.75% to 9.25%, to maintain city services.
Revenue from Measure H and expenditures would be included in the city’s annual financial report to show how the funds are spent, according to the press release. The measure requires a simple majority to pass.
The Citizens Oversight Committee would consist of five members appointed by the City Council.
Funds from the sales tax hike would help maintain streets and provide pothole repair, keep police officers at the current level, clean and maintain city parks, and implement traffic safety, among other things.
If voters don’t pass Measure H, the City Council will have to consider reducing or eliminating programs and services, officials have said.
