San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon as he continues to recover from a bullet wound to his chest, the 49ers said in a press release Sunday.
“He and his family, along with the entire San Francisco 49ers organization, would like to thank the San Francisco Police Department, emergency medical services, doctors and staff at San Francisco General Hospital,” the 49ers said.
Pearsall was shot in the chest and wounded in an attempted robbery near Union Square on Saturday afternoon, authorities said in a press release distributed Saturday. Pearsall’s 17-year-old assailant, who was taken into custody, was injured in the holdup attempt about 3:37 p.m. at Geary Street and Grant Avenue, police said Saturday.
Police Chief Bill Scott, speaking at a press conference at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center Saturday, said the juvenile gunman was from Tracy, in San Joaquin County.
Scott said the youth was hospitalized in stable condition. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said charges will be filed in juvenile court.
There was no indication that Pearsall was targeted because he is a football player, Scott said.
Scott said police presence would be stepped up in the Union Square shopping district.
The neighborhood where the shooting took place is one block from Union Square, the city’s major retail hub.
Pearsall, 23, was drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.
