The election results were certified last week for a July special election in Millbrae that saw two city councilmembers decisively recalled.
Councilmembers Angelina Cahalan, who represented District 2, and Maurice Goodman, who represented District 4, were targeted by voters in a recall campaign after they declined to oppose the purchase of a La Quinta Inn by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors to be converted into affordable housing.
Goodman received 1,250 votes in favor of recall, 77.5% of her district’s votes.
Cahalan received 724 votes in favor of recall, 70.9% of the vote.
Turnout was low, at about 46%, and 96% of voters voted by mail. Overall, 2,635 votes were cast.
Voters were angry the two did not join a city council letter to the County Board of Supervisors expressing opposition to the purchase of the property by the county. The project calls for converting the hotel at 1390 El Camino Real into permanent supportive housing for families and seniors.
The city of Millbrae filed a lawsuit arguing that voters must approve the project. It was dismissed, and the city is appealing.
